What is Attaché Keystroke File Import (KFI)?

Keystroke File Import (KFI) allows you to automatically update files in Attaché by importing data from files created in other software applications. New records can be added and existing records modified.

KFI combines the speed of data import with the security of data validation to ensure efficiency and data integrity. Data is read directly into maintenance and transaction task screens, saving the time it would normally take an operator to key the data, while at the same time ensuring that no invalid codes or values are imported. For all transactional data, Attaché provides full validation of entries using KFI (for example, to check product codes).

You can create text files for KFI using an application such as Microsoft Excel or Notepad, or you can export text files from third-party solutions, such as web stores or human resources type applications. Entries to be imported can be specified using either comma separated values (CSV) or XML data structures.

Depending on your requirements, importing can be as required (standard KFI) or automated (unattended KFI). For example, you can use unattended KFI for auto-importing orders received from a web store.

Standard Keystroke File Import

To run KFI in standard mode you need to open the appropriate Attaché task screen, activate the KFI program, select the file and begin the import.

When you import a file into Attaché using standard KFI, the details are displayed on the screen and validated as though you were actually entering the information from the keyboard. You may speed up or slow down the import as it occurs. For example, you may wish to begin the import slowly so you can check that the file is importing correctly, then speed up the import to finish the task quickly. You can interrupt the import at any time and then resume or cancel it. If invalid data is entered the KFI stops and prompts you to deal with the problem.

Unattended Keystroke File Import

With unattended KFI, updates are triggered automatically, ensuring that data is imported and transactions are processed at the most appropriate time and in a manner which minimises disruptions.

To work with unattended Keystroke File Import, you need to place your import files in the INBOX folder within the KFIDATA or user's folder. Whenever a user with appropriate menu access rights is signed on to a company, an automatic scanning process searches the relevant company folder at set intervals for files with a .KFI extension. For more information, refer to Location of Keystroke Import files

If a file is found, it is first validated before being processed. After the KFI is successfully processed it is then moved to another folder. Unattended Keystroke File Import can be run in either interactive or silent mode. In interactive mode, the KFI runs in the same manner as for standard KFI, as though it had been selected from the Attaché File menu. In silent mode, the KFI runs in a minimised window in the background, leaving you free to perform other tasks in the existing Attaché session.

You can also create a manifest file that determines the processing sequence of multiple unattended KFI's and the state under which they should be run.
